Originally, Dark Souls II was intended to have something more akin to real lighting. There are videos of it and it looks great. At some point, FromSoft decided to make large scale changes, either due to inability of consoles to performantly run with the lighting, or deciding that the darkness was an unfun mechanic. Or a thousand other possible reasons, I don't really know.

What matters is that this mod, utilizing the Dark Souls II ENB mod (additional shoutouts to wickfut for the original ENB config I worked from)with settings tweaked to offer "truer" lighting, gives us a look into how the game could and would have been played before ambient light was enabled in most areas.

The layout is clockwise starting from top left:

True lighting no torch
Vanilla lighting no torch
True lighting with torch
Vanilla lighting with torch.

This area stands out the most as being clearly designed around darkness, what with the multiple sconces throughout. This is one of many areas where this mod really shows the original intent for the game.

Huntmans Copse is a particular standout section.
