GSY REVIEW | PC, PS4, Xbox One Monday, December 2, 2019 | 3:00 PM

We reviewed Arise: A Simple Story

We reviewed Arise: A Simple Story

The year is almost over and things are starting to slow down in the industry, but it does not mean we still don't have a few nice surprises to share with you. Arise: A Simple Story is definitely one of them, to the point it's going to be one of the most memorable indie games we've played in 2019. If you want to know more, read our verdict and watch our gameplay video of the PC version. We only had time (and courage) to record a video review in French but the good news is you at least won't have to listen to my stuffy nose.
Note: We'll also have Xbox One X videos as soon as we can.

Verdict

Much like Journey and Inside, Arise: A Simple Story has taken us on a roller coaster ride we are clearly not going to forget. Not only is the game artistically superb, it is also great to play with a time control mechanic that gives it a peculiar flavor. Aside from the moving yet simple story, there are so many great moments gameplay wise, as the way time is controlled is dealt differently depending on the level you're in. As a result, there is a lot of variety, in terms of atmosphere, types of landscapes and even gameplay, which makes the 5/6-hour playthrough a joy to experience from beginning to end. There isn't much else to say as we don't want to spoil anything, so if what you see in the video is to your liking, don't hesitate and go buy the game as soon as it launches tomorrow.
  • On the upside
  • Aesthetically superb
  • Awesome animations
  • Memorable soundtrack
  • Prepare to be amazed
  • The time mechanic is a very cool concept
  • Much variety (gameplay and situations alike)
  • A true emotional roller coaster
  • On the downside
  • Lack of precision at times (missed jumps happen)

Seth @KORNdog: yeah i don't see this happen anytime soon. it's why i find funny some people suddenly say ''i'm done, after 25 years with ps, moving to pc''. (1 Hour ago)

KORNdog What WOULD shock me is of Sony turns around and announces day 1 releases of exclusives on PC moving forward. That wouldn't make a whole lot of sense to me. (8 Hours ago)
  • KORNdog
KORNdog Releasing on PC at that point allows them to make more money while not cannibalising sales on their platform. (8 Hours ago)

KORNdog By the time horizon hits PC it'll be 3 years old. It's bargain bin price on PS4 and it's used game circulation means it's effectively a dead title for Sony and their earnings. (8 Hours ago)

KORNdog @Sdarts: I imagine Sony's plan is release old games on PC at full retail to make money on titles that no longer drive sales or make them much money. (8 Hours ago)

Seth @Sdarts: flying with stormbird mod in Horizon! This is something Guerrilla wanted to have in the game, but it was cut due to limitations of ps4 hardware. (2 Days ago)

Sdarts Just imagine what those modders and the community would do with a PC version.......... *extreme drooling* (2 Days ago)
