How does The Sinking City run on Switch?

With its many technical shortcomings on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, we didn't expect the Switch version of The Sinking City to shine particularly but we still were curious to see how Frogwares had ported their game on Nintendo's console. It's nice to see so many non indie titles coming to Switch, even though it's not always the best way to experience them. Compared to the other versions of the game, you'll see a lot more aliasing and pop-in issues, fewer pedestrians on the street it seems and a choppy framerate that doesn't go too low according to our plugin, but that is nonetheless quite annoying. Details also seem to have gotten lost since last June, but handheld mode manages to hide the graphical shortcomings a little at least. What will remain an issue though are the awfully long loading times (loading the game from the title screen takes about 1 minute and a half), which makes dying all the more frustrating as you can imagine. The Sinking City is not a bad game by any means, it just lacks a good amount of polish and a bit of variety when it comes to its gameplay mechanics, but to play it on Switch you'll have to make even more compromises than on the other systems.

Our XB1X videos of The Sinking City

Just like in the good old days when we could regularly show you games on all systems, we were sent an Xbox One version of The Sinking City to share some gameplay footage. As you will see, Frogwares decided to go for an unlocked framerate, which might not have been the best choice considering how unstable it is. From what we've seen, it doesn't seem to go below 30 in most cases so it would be nice if an option to lock the number of frames at 30 were made available in the near future. As for the game itself, it definitely has some issues (mostly on the technical side, but we also find the gameplay loop to be a bit limited after a few hours), but its atmosphere and story-ies make it a decent game to play if you like the myth of Cthulhu. Now we advise you all to wait a few patches and possibly a sale not to pay it full price.

How about we show you a bit of The Sinking City

The Sinking City has finally been released so we can lift the veil on the gameplay footage we prepared beforehand. There should have been a bit more coverage of recent games, but sadly an Internet breakdown at my place has made it quite a challenge to have the following videos ready (and even to download the game to be perfectly honest). Enjoy!

The Sinking City: Detective Gameplay Trailer

Here is a four-minute look at the investigation system of The Sinking City, the upcoming Lovecraftian game from Frogwares, the studio behind the Sherlock Holmes games. The players control Charles Reed in the streets of Oakmont in the '20s and are tasked with investigating the reasons behind the madness and supernatural elements present in the town. No hints or assistance can help the players, they have to rely on exploration and their own observation to discover clues. The Retrocognition ability allows to replay past scenes.

Frogwares reveals The Sinking City

Frogwares was initially the developer of the upcoming Call of Cthulhu game for Focus Home Interactive. It's no longer the case as you learned recently since Cyanide has been working on it for quite some time. But Frogwares didn't abandon their idea of an open-world investigation Lovecraftian game and therefore here is the reveal of The Sinking City. A screenshot and a couple of artworks inside for this title that is "bigger than what [the studio] ever made". The team will bring a demo version at GDC.
